Focus of Work

I am a senior scientist at the Center for Development Research in the Dept. of Ecology and Natural Resource Management. I have been conducting research on sustainability issues since 2006. My research covers four thematic areas: (i) food security and food systems, (ii) sustainable land use including climate change adaptation, (iii) sustainability standards and sustainable global supply chains (including sustainable consumption) (iv) gender equity, human rights and social justice. Main areas of work are Africa, Latin America and Asia.
In the area of gender research, I work on gender norms and the distribution of roles and labor in agriculture, decision-making processes and power relations, gendered impacts of agricultural innovations, development projects, and formal social protection systems. A new topic are the linkages between gender-based violence and agricultural development.
Together with a colleague, I lead a working group on gender at ZEF, which aims to promote gender-sensitive research and supports senior and junior researchers in integrating gender perspectives in their research projects, as well as develops gender studies curricula and material for inter- and transdisciplinary courses.
