Prof. Dr. theol. Judith Könemann M.A., born 1962, studied Catholic theology (diploma), sociology and education (M.A.) in Münster and Tübingen. 2002 PhD at the Faculty of Catholic Theology in Münster with a thesis on formations of religiosity in modernity under the title: "I wish I was religious, I believe. Approaches to Religion and Religiosity in Late Modernity in Catholic Theology“. 1992-1997 research assistant at the Seminar for Pastoral Theology and Religious Education at the Faculty of Catholic Theology, Münster. 1995-2005 full-time collegague at the Catholic education center Haus Ohrbeck, Georgsmarienhütte and director of training for pastoral and parish assistants in the diocese of Osnabrück. 2005-2009 Director of the Swiss Pastoral Sociological Institute in St. Gallen (SPI) and Executive Director of the Pastoral Planning Commission (PPK) of the Swiss Bishops' Conference. Since 2009 Professor of Religious Education, Educational Research and Gender and Director of the Centre for Theological Gender Studies of the Faculty of Catholic Theology at the University of Münster. 2009-2017 member of the Cluster of Excellence "Religion and Politics", since 2012 member and 2016-2020 speaker of the Center for Religion and Modernity (CRM). Since 2020 deputy speaker of the review board FK 107 Theology of the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Focus of Work

My research focus are on the fields of intersectionality and educational justice with a special focus on the category of gender, gender issues in religious education, education and sustainability, ethical and social learning as well as youth and adult education. A separate focus is on issues related to the sociology of religion, in particular questions of the relationship between religion and the public sphere and individual religiosity research. Methodologically, I often work with a qualitative-empirical approach.
