Professor of General Literary Studies/Media Theory at the Institute for German Language and Literature at the University of Cologne since 1999. 2000–2004 co-project manager at the cultural studies research college "Media and Cultural Communication". Part-project: gender representations in film. Guest professorships, assistant professorships and fellowships at Washington University in St. Louis, Petersburg, Seoul, University of Pavia. Various Publications on European literature of the 18th to 20th century, gender difference, psychoanalysis and film. Co-editor of the E.T.A. Hoffmann-Jahrbuch. 1996 grants: Stipendium der Studienstiftung, Stipendium der Landesgraduiertenförderung, DFG-Habilitationsstipendium, Heisenberg-Stipendium. Habilitation 1995 at the University of Freiburg on E.T.A. Hoffmann ("Aporie des Kunstmythos. Die Texte E. T. A. Hoffmanns"). PhD 1989 on Fontane's novels at the Albert Ludwigs University Freiburg ("Das Ich und die andern. Fontanes Figuren und ihre Selbstbilder", 1990). Born 1962 in Spellen, student of German literature, history and philosophy in Freiburg.
