On April 16, 2024, Dr Bontu Lucie Guschke will give the lecture “The Persistence of Sexism and Racism at Universities” as part of the CEWS colloquium. The lecture will be held in English. The presentation discusses how sexist and racist harassment and discrimination are reproduced in workplaces at universities. Building on empirical research that integrates discourse and affect analysis to focus on the interplay of individual- and structural-level factors, it details how harassment and discrimination are facilitated in a context of in/ formality which prevails at universities, leading to a continuous reproduction of inequality. Drawing on dis/organization theory as well as queer and Black feminist understandings of vulnerability, autonomy, and discrimination, it is further discussed how harassment and discrimination remain imperceptible and unspeakable. On this basis, implications for organizational practice are discussed that recognize anti-harassment and anti-discrimination as ongoing, relational organizational practices and address the affective ambiguities of harassment and discrimination.

The lecture builds on Walby’s earlier analysis of gender relations as constituted in a few major varieties of gender regimes and analyses the current authoritarian turn. Authoritarianism is distinguished from the neoliberal gender regime from which it is emerging. Violence is not treated as an individual behaviour but as a social institution, equivalent to the institutional domains of economy, polity, and civil society. This offers a new context in which to think about whether the use of the criminal justice system to reduce and end violence against women is carceral or the completion of the project of modernity for women. The form of the gender regime shapes the implications of these feminist projects to prevent violence in intersectional contexts.

Prof. Dr. Andrea Herrmann wird über Frauenanteile in den MINT-Fächern sprechen (MINT = Mathematik, Informatik, Naturwissenschaft und Technik). Dabei geht es um die magische 30%-Grenze, die der Frauenanteil überschreiten müsste, damit Frauen keine Minderheit mehr wären. Auch innerhalb der technischen Fächer und innerhalb der Informatik bearbeiten Frauen eher die "weichen" Themen, das heißt, auch hier herrschen Klischees. Im Vortrag werden anhand von Daten, Zahlen und Statistiken Mechanismen diskutiert, die zu diesen geschlechtsspezifischen Ungleichgewichten führen - sowohl die scheinbar freiwillige Themenwahl als auch verschiedene Auswahlmechanismen im Berufsleben.

Centering around theoretical debates on the role of violence in varieties of gender regimes, the Master Class will explore Walby’s theorising on violence in varieties of gender regimes and discuss how her conceptualizations can be used as methodological tools in empirical research projects. The Class aims to advance theoretical foundations of research on society, change, gender, and violence and intends to bring together early career researchers (post-docs and doctoral candidates) from different disciplinary backgrounds with an established scholar in order to foster an interdisciplinary exchange on contemporary strands of social and feminist theory.

Despite economic development, modern slavery and traffcking persists in all parts of the world. The book launch offers a first insight into the main arguments, presented in Traffcking Chains. Modern Slavery in Society. The authors, Sylvia Walby and Karen Shire, argue for an integrated view on traffcking not only as an issue of crime, but nested in multiple regimes of inequality, pleading for a solid regulation of the economy, better welfare, and social protections. The introduction to the main arguments of the book by the authors, is followed by a discussion of the book from different disciplinary perspectives by commentators Kristin Platt, Miriam Rehm and Brigitte Young.

Mit der sexuellen Befreiung sehen wir uns als losgelöst von alten Zwängen und ödipalen Verboten – können wir nun alles sein, uns selbst entwerfen, uns nur aus uns selbst heraus entwickeln? Und ist das eine feministische Utopie? Heute geht kein Zwang mehr aus vom strengen Vater, sondern vielmehr von der Aufforderung, alles zu genießen und mit der eigenen Identität eins zu sein, so die Theorie der postödipalen Gesellschaft. Alle Interessierten und Diskussionsfreudigen sind herzlich zu einer einführenden Abendveranstaltung und einem Lektüreseminartag mit den feministischen Theoretikerinnen Tove Soiland und Anna Hartmann eingeladen. Sie sind gemeinsam mit Marie Frühauf die Herausgeberinnen der beiden Bände „Postödipale Gesellschaft“ und „Sexuelle Differenz in der postödipalen Gesellschaft“, erschienen 2022, Turia+Kant, Wien.
